The Pit

A few years back I actually had the dream described in this song. It was like the pit from Star Wars was lifted up and placed in the middle of a ghost town, a town almost done with sacrifice. (This was the bleak version from the original release, not the over-wrought revision.)

I've been having trouble finding quiet to record vocal tracks. I had to rush to finish what I've got. As a result, the vocals are more imperfect than usual.

The album concept (repeated from my bio): This FAWM, I want to write songs for an art album I'm working on. Abstractly, it's an art album about copyright... in the guise of hymn filk. The premise is a lonely space traveler thinks about what might be in store for the colony ship when they get there, but due to copyright restrictions only music made before 1926 is available on-board. So, he combines the two.

Lyrics

(I've been having the dream again...)

I'm trapped in a dry, desert land.
The town empty, save for a few.
All have been sacrificed away.
soon i will have face the pit.

Treacherous sandy walls sloped steep.
Those cast in do not really die.
That would be too kind, too sublime.
No one ever leaves that stark pit.

Is it a vision of the past?
Or a dark future yet to come?
Are we heading to bleak despair?
Welcomed only to the doom pit.

If we're lucky perhaps mob bosses
will cast unwanted bodies there.
Then, perhaps, we could ignore it,
a sad and unworshiped black pit.
