I did this song in the first few hours of February 1st (local time).
It showed some challenges of hymn-filking. It is easy to think you can just go by meter, but... it never seems to be just that way.
Overall, particularly as a first FAWM song, it went super smoothly and I'm happy with the results. For a set of lyrics that tell a story, it does that well. I may revisit this alien as a culture and not as a last-of-her-kind. If I do that, I think it'll be easier to work with the concept.
My biggest disappointment for this song is that it seems to discount the premise of my concept album. I knew that was happening early in the lyric-writing process, but I wasn't sure how to make the songs mesh perfectly with the concept.
To that end, at least for the duration of FAWM, I'll be leading in (or even bookending) the songs with spoken words that bridges between the concept and the specific song. (Even if they later wind up only in liner notes, they'll provide a mental bridge for me, if nothing else.)
EDIT: I think I've found a way to make this work with the album's concept. I've revised the lyrics for what I plan to do.
(meter: 8-8-8-7-4)
(Spoken lines, to be added later: "Dating on this ship is next to impossible. beep beep Maybe when we land, I'll meet...")
<song>
(Spoken) Good-bye.
(Spoken lines, to be added later:beep beep "Hmm... maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea.")
